Author Lisa Wingate will present the historical background for her groundbreaking novel, Before We Were Yours. The novel tells the story of children stolen, mistreated, manipulated, and sold through the Tennessee Children’s Home Society (TCHS) in the first half of the twentieth century. The plot of this astonishing novel develops around a sad and striking paradox, the true story of the TCHS and Georgia Tann, a woman believed responsible for the kidnapping and adoption-for-profit of over 5,000 children and the probable deaths of over 500 children from the 1920s-1950. Before We Were Yours examines the disturbing subject of inhumanity for the goal of profit, yet it is also a novel of hope. It asks readers to consider the value of young lives, not as commodities or “blank slates,” as Tann often presented her wards, but as human beings with memories, needs, and dreams.
