But his talent for art began when he was a boy, the youngest of ten children, growing up on a Wisconsin backwoods farm. He couldn’t help but become very aware of the environment that supplied the family’s daily needs and the wildlife that surrounded them. Don and Barbara, his wife and business partner, traveled all over the United States and Canada on a motorcycle. Other trips to Alaska, Africa, and Australia have been among their favorites. These journeys are his inspiration. He takes the animals and landscapes he’s seen, and brings the splendid colors of nature into his paintings. The depth, clarity, and detail he is able to obtain with watercolor contributes to the vitality of his distinctive style. While realism and authenticity are an integral part of his watercolor paintings, they're much more than animal studies. Getting up close to a Balke painting is like getting up close to the creature itself in its own environment. A frequent comment is that they're "real enough to touch." He's pleased that this living quality is perceived by people who view his art. Don captures the timeless language of nature in his paintings, and feels well-rewarded in knowing that others are enjoying his work with him. Don painted the series, "Animals of the 50 States", sanctioned by the National Audubon Society, the "Wildlife of the 50 States" issued through the National Wildlife Federation, and several other "50 States" commissions including songbirds, baby animals, wading birds, and water birds. Don has also been commissioned to paint other series - the US National Parks, African wildlife, and endangered species. They moved to the mountains of North Carolina and built the art gallery, 32 years ago, on their land. There you’ll find Don’s award-winning paintings and reproductions. There are over 550 beautifully framed prints available for sale. Don is available on weekends to meet and greet visitors and other hours by appointment. To celebrate his 60 years of artwork, the gallery is having an unprecedented sale that will run from July 1 to August 15. There are several sold out limited edition framed prints available. So, if you’ve been wanting that sold out cougar, deer, cardinal, wild turkey, or raccoon print, now is your chance.
