The Arts at Queens presents Modern Jazz master Ran Blake and Queens Music alumna Claire Ritter (’78) in a two-piano performance of original composition. Blake is a composer, New England Conservatory pianist, and the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant. Ritter’s awards include a North Carolina Arts Council Jazz Composer Fellowship. The evening features original works inspired by women in art, including painters Vieira da Silva (“La Scala”), Barbara Pennington (“Selma” from the Mint Museum’s permanent collection) and Georgia O’Keeffe (“Orange & Red Streak”), as well as jazz pianist/composer Mary Lou Williams, with whom Ritter studied at Duke University. Also performing; Tanja Bechtler, cello and Kent O’Doherty, saxophone. This performance is supported by a grant from the Arts & Science Council and also commemorates the 50th anniversary celebration of the North Carolina Arts Council.
