The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library & the Mecklenburg Audubon Society present Dr. Mark Stanback of Davidson College. He will talk about the Acorn Woodpecker With their clownish faces, Acorn Woodpeckers are not only very attractive birds, they also exhibit some of the strangest behaviors in the avian world. Every year, they store thousands of acorns in specially constructed little holes in what is known as a granary tree. (see right) Communal by nature, the Acorn Woodpeckers share this cache with all the members of the group. When it comes to raising their young, it is not left just up to the parents, but the whole group is involved in caring for the baby chicks. Though native to the western United States, it is certainly a bird worth learning more about, so please reserve a seat today!
