Charlotte based dance artist Audrey Baran and New York based cellist Daniel Levin are joining forces for one evening of collaboration and improvisation. This unique event will feature experimental solo work by each artist, plus an on-the-spot collaborative performance. Don’t miss it! DOORS 6pm | SHOW 7pm | $5 at door AUDREY BARAN is the founder and artistic director of Baran Dance, a contemporary dance company based in Charlotte, NC. She graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a BA in Dance in 2003 and is an MFA Dance candidate at Hollins University. Baran is recently an inaugural recipient of the Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts and Science Council and has received awards and nominations from the Movies by Movers Festival, the Charlotte Emerging Dance Awards, and the Carolina Arts & Theatre Awards. She is an Adjunct Lecturer in Dance at UNC Charlotte, on the teaching faculty of Charlotte Ballet Academy and Open Door Studios, and the resident choreographer at several public schools. Baran is the founder and director of BD2, the apprentice company to Baran Dance, as well as Beyond Baran Dance, an outreach dance program for immigrant and refugee students. She also writes about dance in Charlotte and the surrounding areas and is a Registered Yoga Teacher at the 500-hr level. Baran thrives on sharing her love of movement and mindfulness throughout the Queen City and beyond. DANIEL LEVIN was born in Burlington, Vermont and began playing the cello at the age of six. In 2001, he graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies from the New England Conservatory of Music and arrived on the New York City jazz scene shortly thereafter. Since then, Daniel has developed his own distinctive voice as a cellist, improviser, and composer. Ed Hazell noted upon release of Levin’s first record as a leader, “Cellist Daniel Levin is a major new voice on his instrument and in improvised music.” Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improvisation all figure prominently in his unique sound. He has performed and/or recorded with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Gerald Cleaver, Andrew Cyrille, Mark Dresser, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Tony Malaby, Mat Maneri, Joe Morris, Joe McPhee, William Parker, Ivo Perelman, Warren Smith, Ken Vandermark, and many others. Daniel is the recipient of a Jerome Foundation award. He has released more than 20 albums as a leader or co-leader, which can be found on Clean Feed, HatOLOGY, Not Two, Trost, Riti, and various other record labels.
