Inspired by the classic Spanish novella "The Life of Lazarillo of Tormes, His Fortunes and Misfortunes as Told by Himself," this new show – "Picaro" – from McColl Center artist-in-residence and University of North Carolina at Charlotte professor CarlosAlexis Cruz, combines elements of circus aerial acrobatics, comedy, masks, live music and a bit of immersive theatre from the audience.
Lazarito is an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy, who is forced to leave his family and his home because of crime, the police and to look for a better life. With no way to turn back, our hero embarks on a brave journey that tens of thousands of children like Lazarito make every year. Lazarito decides he has to leave Guatemala, cross the giant country of Mexico and find his way to America, the land of the free, home of the brave.
Along the way, Lazarito runs into thieves, friends, a lack of food, coyotes and a few nuns and priests, who help him find his way.
