July 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Camp Greene-the Charlotte-based military facility that mobilized and trained nearly 60,000 U.S. soldiers for the rigors of overseas combat in the European theater of WWI.

The exigencies of war aside, the story of Camp Greene provides a window look at the crosscurrent of attitudes that shaped the character of Charlotte and the politics of the camp during the period. Regional identity, segregation and race issues, North-South relations, international affairs and public policy, and public health matters among others, made Camp Greene a macrocosm of the discourses that brought the local, national, and international into intimate conversation. In concert with international WWI centenary events, Levine Museum of the New South will host Splendid Service, an exhibit that place  the history of WWI into broad contexts.
