Uptown entertainment

Blumenthal Performing Arts venues present a wide genre of shows. From Opera Carolina and the Charlotte Ballet to stand-up comedians and Broadway troupe performances of “The Wizard of Oz,” among other nationally touring top shows, you’ll find something to love on the events calendars.

Shows on the rise

For 88 years, Theatre Charlotte has produced compelling dramatic performances at the helm of professional directors, designers and staff. The volunteer-based company, which set up shop at its famed, still-current Queens Road locale in 194l, is a staple in the Charlotte community.

Historical backdrops

Constructed in 1955, Ovens Auditorium has hosted millions of fans for live performances by legends, like Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan. Over the years, die-hard devotees have seen their favorite singers, comedians and celebrities on Ovens’ stage. Today, it still draws a diverse range of artists who dazzle crowds in the iconic Charlotte venue, which celebrated its 60th birthday last October.

Three to see:

  1. Movie theaters, like Studio Movie Grill in Uptown or Cinebarre Arboretum 11 on Providence Road, are serving up more than just popcorn and soda alongside blockbuster reels. Kick back in a comfy leather chair and enjoy a full menu of beverages and bites as you watch the latest releases.
  2. The Charlotte ObserverIMAX® Dome Theatre at Discovery Place offers an unbeatable perspective. Through the power of an awe-inspiring, dome-shaped concept, you’ll dive through the depths of the ocean or journey to outer space, all from the comfort of your seat.
  3. Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa is another famed hub boasting both local and national talent. Nestled along a block that connects dozens of popular bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect venue when you want to make it a full night out.
