Story by Bernie Petit
If public art is intended to grab your attention, then perhaps no local artwork demands your gaze more than Metalmorphosis, the futuristic sculpture located in the Whitehall Technology Park in southwest Charlotte. The 30-foot, 14-ton work by provocative Czech artist David Cerný consists of spinning stainless-steel plates that form and reform into the shape of a giant metal head that sometimes spits water. The privately-held public artwork, previously named one of “The Seven Wonders of Charlotte” by The Charlotte Observer, went up in 2007. The shimmering bald dome reflects the fountain in which it rests, the buildings surrounding it and the sky above it.
