Story by Lelia King
The Charlotte United Buddy Bear is a 6-foot tall fiberglass bear sculpture painted by artist Sharon Dowell that was installed at Arequipa Park at the Main Public Library in Charlotte, North Carolina, in July 2014. Sponsored by the Alemannia Society, German Saturday School, German American Chamber of Commerce, Language & Culture Foundation, Kuehne & Nagel, Inc. and the Waldthausen family, Buddy Bear represents gratitude from the German community to Charlotte, which was named after Germany’s Princess Charlotte, born in Mecklenburg, Germany. Dowell traveled to Berlin, Germany to paint Charlotte’s Buddy Bear, which is the first in the Southeast.
