Story by Bernie Petit
Drive down Central Avenue, away from Uptown, and you’ll find a sparkling public work of art, which connects the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Eastway Division to the East Charlotte community it protects and serves. What will immediately catch your eye are the colorful glass panels of Cooperation, the exterior art wall of interlinking, circular shapes and rectilinear lines located in front of the station. A companion interior art glass named Unity sits atop the main entrance.
Both artworks, created by Durham glass artist Vivienne McConnell and installed in April 2014, represent the collaboration between the police department and the surrounding neighborhoods in creating safe environments.
