The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) is pleased to announce that Director of Research Michael Applegate attained a Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) credential from the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI). Recognized by the destination marketing industry as its highest educational achievement, the senior level development program focuses on vision, leadership, productivity and the implementation of business strategies. The program which requires completion of five courses and a final exam over a four-year period held the graduation ceremony during DMAI’s 2009 Annual Convention in Atlanta on July 29th.
As director of research for the CRVA, Applegate is responsible for conducting research to enhance Charlotte’s destination marketing efforts as well as the operation of Charlotte’s CRVA managed facilities (the Charlotte Convention Center, Bojangles’ Coliseum, Ovens Auditorium, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Time Warner Cable Arena). His other professional certifications and credentials include a Professional of Destination Management (PDM) certification from DMAI, serving as a past Chairman of DMAI’s Research Committee, and currently serving as Secretary of the Southeast chapter of Travel & Tourism Research Association (SETTRA). He is a member of the Charlotte Area Research Porfessionals (CARP), Travel & Tourism Research Association (TTRA), and US Travel Association (USTA). Applegate is a graduate of Purdue University and holds a master’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He lives in Charlotte’s Ballantyne area with his wife, Janet, and their two children, Meredith and Patrick.
