Shortly after taking off from New York’s La Guardia Airport on January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 struck a flock of Canada geese and lost power on both engines. Losing altitude fast and with no certainty of reaching a runway, the captain chose to make an emergency landing in the freezing Hudson River. Everyone on board survived. Many called it a miracle. The skills of the captain and first officer, good decisions, immediate rescue and a dose of luck, certainly, but behind this success story also lie years of improvements in aviation technology and safety.
