New in Charlotte: More than 500 hotel rooms coming to Center City

Construction of Uptown Hotels Will Bring More than 500 New Rooms to Center City

Charlotte, N.C. (March 14, 2013) – The construction of three hotels in Uptown Charlotte will bring 527 hotel rooms to Center City within the next few years. Plans are in the works for the construction of a 125-room hotel near the AAA Charlotte Knights BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. BPR Properties based in Greensboro, N.C., bought land near the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Charlotte Convention Center to build a 230-room Embassy Suites. And construction is nearing completion on the 22-story Skye Condominium high-rise development on the corner of South Caldwell and Third streets that will include a 172-room Hyatt Place Hotel.

Hotel Near BB&T Ballpark
In addition to the BB&T Ballpark, slated to open April 10, 2014, in Center City’s Third Ward, the AAA Charlotte Knights also plan to offer visitors a place to stay—a 125-room hotel near the Uptown stadium. The hotel would be constructed near the stadium, which is located at the intersections of Mint Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Graham Street and Fourth Street. The Knights are in discussions with various developers but plan to include potential mixed-use office space and underground parking at the hotel.

The eight-acre, LEED certified BB&T Ballpark development offers more than 10,000 seats with remarkable views of the natural grass field and the city skyline. Construction of the 5.4-acre Romare Bearden Park continues directly across the street from right field. Another special feature of the stadium is two field level suites only 45 feet away from the batter putting spectators closer to home plate than the pitcher. The stadium will also host events year round featuring anything from concerts, sports tournaments, festivals, community events and more.

Embassy Suites
Greensboro-based BPR Properties purchased land directly across from the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. for the development of a nine-story, 200,000-square-foot Embassy Suites. The proximity to the Charlotte Convention Center just one block away was a leading factor in the deal. Site preparation and construction is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year. The hotel plans include 230 guest suites, 7,500 square feet of event space, 7,000 square feet of retail space and a parking deck.

Hyatt Place Hotel
Nearing completion, the 22-story SKYE Condominium mixed-use, high-rise development in Uptown Charlotte will include a 172-room limited-service Hyatt Place Hotel on floors 7 – 13. The high rise will also include 67 luxury condos, two penthouses, 2,500 square feet of ground floor retail space and a five-story parking garage. An 8,000-square-foot open-air rooftop restaurant and sky bar with 360-degree views along with a rooftop pool, sundeck and gardens are key features of the development. The project is on schedule with an expected completion date in the third quarter of this year.
