Founded by the Romans at a crossing on the River Thames, the city of London has a storied history. The capital of England, London was the focus of the British Empire in the nineteenth-century. Surviving fires, plagues and wars, London continues as the center of British government and royal ceremonies and is a leading city of the modern world. The presentation overviews the history of London from ancient to modern times.
Silver Star Community, Inc. and Charlotte Museum of History present a dinner and presentation by Stephanie Deutsch. Ms. Deutsch, whose husband is a great-grandson of Julius Rosenwald, will discuss the inspiring story of the partnership between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald to provide schools for the African American community in the South in the early twentieth century.
This program will benefit the restoration of the Siloam Rosenwald School, relocate and install it at the Charlotte Museum of History, creation of an exhibition on Charlotte and Mecklenburg County's African American history, and provide an endowment to maintain the building. Ms. Deutsch, whose husband is a great-grandson of Julius Rosenwald, has written a book titled You Need a Schoolhouse: Booker T. Washington, Julius Rosenwald, and the Building of Schools for the Segregated South. Mr. Abuwi will discuss the legacy of his great-grandfather, Dr. Booker T. Washington.
A cocktail reception from 6:00 – 7:00 will be followed by dinner and the speakers. This program will benefit the restoration of the Siloam School.
