Charlotte scores one of the “50 Fastest-Growing Trade Shows”
Need a team to stand behind? Well here’s something to get up and cheer for. The TEAMS Conference & Expo – the world’s largest gathering of sports-event organizers and industry stakeholders – is coming to Charlotte in a little less than a year. So what does this mean for the Queen City? A slam dunk, home run, touchdown, GOAL! Any way you call it, it’s a major victory for Charlotte. The city will be thrust into the spotlight of the worldwide sporting and travel industry, a $182 billion industry that has remained strong despite recent economic turbulence.
“Sporting events are one of the fastest-growing and most economically resilient industries within the travel and tourism sector,” said Mike Butts, executive director of Visit Charlotte, who, along with a lineup including Mike Anderson, director of Visit Charlotte’s sports division, and representatives from the NC Sports Association, the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, and the NC Division of Film, Tourism, and Sports Development, was responsible for bringing TEAMS to the Queen City. “It was a real team effort to bring this conference to Charlotte. We are confident that after the extensive list of leaders and representatives from this industry experience our amazing sporting facilities and attractions, they’ll be back with their sports groups in tow, resulting in tremendous economic impact for the Charlotte region and the entire state of NC.”
Since its inception, TEAMS has experienced double-digit percentage growth every year and was recently selected for the fifth time as one of the “50 Fastest-Growing Trade Shows” by Tradeshow Week, the global exhibition industry news magazine, based on the growth of total net square footage and the number of exhibiting companies over the previous three years. The informative trade show, which was attended by more than 1,100 sports-event industry professionals in 2009, is organized by SportsTravel magazine, and plays host to more than 300 sports-event suppliers and destinations, like Visit Charlotte, as exhibitors each year. One-on-one appointments coupled with educational sessions and networking opportunities help attract participants from the worldwide sporting and travel industry.
