Republican National Convention
WELCOME TO THE QUEEN CITY
Charlotte will join the short list of major cities that have hosted both national conventions of both political parties within a span of less than 10 years when the Republican National Convention comes to Charlotte, August 24-27, 2020. Major events such as these generate sizable economic impact, elevate the awareness of Charlotte on a global level & provide employment opportunities for our hospitality industry. Charlotte’s undeniable energy and welcoming spirit will greet visitors as they discover a diverse city brimming with tastemakers, trendsetters and incredible encounters.
As Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority CEO Tom Murray said when the GOP announced Charlotte as the site of the 2020 Republican National Convention, “Charlotte has the collaboration, infrastructure and hospitality that will make the 2020 RNC an unforgettable experience for its attendees.”
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE 2020 RNC?
Charlotte is poised to welcome 35,000 visitors to our community during the 2020 Republican National Convention including 15,000 national and international journalists showcasing Charlotte on a global stage. Major events like the RNC create meaningful economic impact for our community. The outcome of the 2012 DNC, an impressive $163.6 million, resulted in a historic high for the most positive economic impact ever produced by a single Charlotte event.

WILL THERE BE HOTEL ROOMS AVAILABLE FOR GUESTS DURING THE 2020 RNC?
Due to the large number of guests expected for the RNC, most of our hotel rooms will be reserved for the official convention delegations and associated companies. However, there are other hotel and lodging offerings within driving distances to the event. To search hotel availability, we suggest reaching out to your preferred hotel directly or using an online travel agency such as the ones listed below. WHAT'S CHANGED IN CHARLOTTE SINCE THE 2012 CONVENTION?
Charlotte’s good economy has certainly enhanced what we’re able to offer the RNC in 2020. We will have increased our hotel room inventory by 25% in 2020 countywide and 66% in Center City. New transportation assets such as the Blue Line extension and green space like Romare Bearden Park and First Ward Park have also come online. We have more than 100 new restaurants and bars in Uptown and South End alone. In 2012 we had two craft breweries, and now we have more than 40 region-wide. We have a lot to offer the more than 30,000 visitors who will descend on Charlotte in August of 2020.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RNC 2020 IN CHARLOTTE?
The Charlotte 2020 Host Committee, led by civic and business leader John Lassiter, is leading the convention planning efforts. The CRVA in partnership with the City, County and other economic development agencies will work closely with the Host Committee to put on a successful event that showcases our great city, creates opportunities for our residents and engages our community. Over the next two years, the Host Committee will collaborate across public, private and civic entities to prepare for the convention. For information on how to contribute or for further information on the Host Committee, please visit their website at charlottein2020.com.
WILL CHARLOTTE BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE 2020 RNC?
Charlotte has continued to hone its expertise in hosting events of this size and caliber as witnessed during the 2012 DNC, years of hosting the CIAA Tournament, major sporting events, and soon, the 2019 NBA All-Star Game. During the 2012 DNC, a federal grant provided $50 million for security-related costs that covered infrastructure, equipment and labor needs. Additional security labor support was enlisted from law enforcement agencies across the country as well as the U.S. Secret Service. The city was commended for its security measures during the 2012 DNC, and safety protocols put into place during that event have been replicated in other cities since then. For both the 2020 RNC and DNC, the host cities would expect to see a similar amount legislated to support security-related needs.
