Bill Spoon’s Barbecue
Best (only) place to get real Eastern NC style BBQ in Charlotte. Not quite on par with Parkers or Bill Ellis in Wilson NC but good enough to hit the spot when I miss the BBQ from home. Brunswick stew is great as well.
Used to eat here a lot a few years ago. Tried it recently and the food was not as good. BBQ was watered down and the Cole slaw had more mustard taste.
I'm between 4 and 5 stars here. I went here for lunch 6 years ago and wasn't all that impressed. At the time, I didn't like vinegar based bbq sauces that much and that was all they had. I now love vinegar based bbq sauces and saw there was a Groupon so I decided to give it another chance. I loved it this time around. The vinegar sauce was very good, but it does have a kick to it. I'm not a fan of spicy food though, so take that with a grain of salt. They also have a non-vinegar sauce now which was pretty good too. They give you baskets of hush puppies which is always the sign of a good bbq place. We got the chopped pork plate and the half rack of ribs. The chopped pork was great (although I do like pulled better), but I didn't really like the ribs. They were ok, but I ended up not eating most of them to save room for dessert. I don't think they're worth the price since the chopped pork was better and cheaper. We got sides of bbq potatoes, coleslaw, mac and cheese, and baked beans. The bbq potatoes were interesting and pretty good. The coleslaw was good, pretty standard slaw. The mac and cheese was definitely the star of the sides and was great with the baked beans. The banana pudding for dessert was amazing. It was a small portion, perfect for one person after a big meal (or to share if you're full). I'll definitely be coming back for lunch! It's a really good traditional bbq place which is hard to find in Charlotte.
The pork BBQ was the highlight of the meal. The ribs tasted cheap and rubbery; I had a few bites and left the rest. Collards were bland as well as the hushpuppies, onion rings and fried flounder. If I go back it will be for the pork BBQ sandwich with mustard slaw which is what they are known for. 4 stars given for the BBQ and the great service only.
This place is something of a Charlotte institution and as much I'd like to recommend it, I just can't. I have been here a number of times, usually not my choice. The food is less than so-so, they serve it on paper plates, the place is old and in need of updating, and the service somewhat like the food is just so-so. If you are specifically looking for BBQ, checkout Midwood BBQ. And they serve their food on real plates.
