What’s the process of creating new and innovative music? Where do ideas and notes come from and how do they end up as music? Stimulus: Sound Works brings together musicians and artists to answer these questions and more. Participants include McColl Center alumna artist, Guggenheim Fellow, and UNC Charlotte visiting artist Pamela Z; current McColl Center artist-in-residence and Guggenheim Fellow Michael Harrison; and UNC Charlotte Assistant Professor of Clarinet and performer Jessica Lindsey. Visiting curator and artist-in-residence Tom Stanley will moderate the discussion. Following the panel, Pamela Z will perform experimental multimedia musical works for solo voice, electronics, and video with animated body gestures. A pioneer of live digital looping techniques, Pamela Z processes her voice in real time to create complex sonic layers, combining extended vocal techniques, operatic bel canto, found objects, text, and sampled concrète sounds. In addition, she will invite the UNC Charlotte Clarinet Choir to join her for a short piece of traditional notation and structured improvisation. Stimulus: Sound Works is presented in partnership with the UNC Charlotte Department of Music. The Stimulus series offers visitors deeper insight into the work and ideas of contemporary artists. These sessions aim to make connections between current McColl Center artists-in-residence, McColl Center alumni artists, and our constantly evolving local arts community.
