The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
Lower South End
Food was quite good, atmosphere too however... service was crummy. Sunday evening, slightly busy & this was our first time there. A sign posted read: "Seat Yourself". OK. We did, at a table which hadn't been cleaned yet. which was OK & so we sat down & waited. And waited. Waited so long that we asked a neighboring table if we were supposed to go up and order. A waitress finally appeared, but didn't speak to is. She just took the dishes. Came back, wiped the table off & laid menus on that very WET table. Her demeanor was so cold we actually asked if she was mad at us. Thank goodness the food was tasty. And thank goodness we didn't need anything else because once the food was served & 1 round of beer delivered - she never came back. A different waitress asked about dessert & brought us our bill. The apple strudel was delicious.
Love this place but... Can't order food from full menu when you are at the bar, can't order takeout over the phone, can't order takeout from restaurant without being harassed about it. Food used to be delicious but it seems to have declined substantially over the past year. Great outdoor beer garten. Beer is unbeatable. Saturday's are always filled with babies and kids, especially on nice days (which is appealing to me, but maybe not everyone).
Surprisingly good food. Wasn't expecting brewery food to be high caliber but the appetizers and Neal I had was actually quite good. Their wings are good size and well flavored. The schnitzel was tastey although the side that came with it can't say I'd go out of my way to have it again but was good hearty combo.
Olde Meck is a wonderful place! The beer is brewed on site, and you can do tours of their process. The food is German style, and very tasty. They also offer wine. They have events here on the weekend frequently, which are always well done and a good time for the whole family. The winter Christmas market is my favorite, with a ton of handmade vendors. They have a fire going and space heaters outside on cold nights.
I've never been a huge fan of OMB. It seems to be over of the most popular breweries, but I don't know many people that like it. I'm not a beer fan, so I can't personally speak for the beer. Compared to most breweries now, they are lacking in non-beer options. They have two wanted to choose from, but they don't have any cider or kombucha. As for the beer, I've heard complaints both from people who aren't big fans of German beer and those that love German beer that it just isn't very good beer. The beer garden is pretty awesome. The food is also pretty good. Parking is a nightmare even though they added all of the additional lots. They put on a very good Christmas market on weekends in December. OMB isn't my brewery of choice and I usually only go if someone else scheduled a happy hour there.
