For the 16th year, GospelSHOUT will bring the high-energy and inspiring music of United House of Prayer for All People, located at 2321 Beatties Ford Road, to the Charlotte community in a free concert. The concert is a part of Charlotte SHOUT!, a 13-day celebration of Charlotte’s art, music, food and ideas. Show up early, starting at 6 p.m., for a culinary treat—a soul food dinner in the church’s cafeteria, which was written up in Gourmet Magazine, for around $10. Anyone who has experienced the gospel choirs and trombone shout bands of United House of Prayer will not soon forget them. Trombone shout bands in the United House of Prayer institution, with the tradition handed down from elder to youngster. The band members don’t learn from sheet music or recordings, but from each other. The composition of the band—as many as a dozen trombones, one or two other horns, and percussion—is unique to trombone shout bands, and so is the style of music. It is improvisational, intense, rhythmic and spiritual. The evening’s featured shout band, Bailey Clouds of Heaven, has recorded for the prestigious Smithsonian Folkways record label. Two choirs, one called the Bailey Stringband, the other the Bailey Golden Angels, will also share the stage. The whole community is invited to share in this authentic Charlotte musical tradition. GospelSHOUT is presented by Charlotte Center City Partners and Levine Museum of the New South.
