Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. From this discovery, gold mining spread gradually to nearby counties and eventually into other southern states. Today you can still feel the cool dampness underground in an early gold mine, marvel at early 20th-century steam locomotives, and relive a colonial or Civil War battle. Visitor centers with exhibits filled with artifacts and multimedia presentations can be found most sites, as are picnic facilities. Most tours and many special programs are free.

This was a fun way to spend our day. Very inexpensive. Wear walking shoes. Shaded Picnic area available. Interpreters were friendly and informative. The atmosphere is very relaxed and casual. The museum was very modernized and well displayed.. Our tour was self guided, which allowed us to pace our tour. We panned for gold and found some!

Very cool place to explore for a few hours with the family. Walking through the mine itself was great, as was panning for gold. Our family of 5 had fun trying our hand at finding some gold nuggets, but I was the only one to walk away with one. It's worth the trip if you like trying something new that everyone can participate in, and you can learn some new things along the way. The hands-on aspect of the gold mine and the panning makes it nice for younger ones with short attention spans.

Great time with your family. Very insteresting to get to know about the gold mines in NC. You actually get to see one. The inside of the mine is cold even if the weather is hot outside. You can enjoy like 1 mile of walk with your family doing a self guided tour. You don't pay to go in. If you want to do panning will need to pay a small fee. The staff is very friendly

Great information, a beautiful wooded walk, and a visit underground into the mine. All at a minimum cost for your pan of dirt to wash in your search for gold. Actually came home with a vial with some flecks! Very fun family afternoon~

This place is amazing. You can take your time on your tour. My family had a great time. Only thing that isn't free is panning for gold which was only like 3 dollars. My daughter found a small flake of gold to bring home. Definitely go back
