Courtyard by Marriott Charlotte Gastonia
Mike Blackhall
First let me say that Im very surprised at the condition of this hotel. For $130.00 I could have chose a variety of other hotels that offered a lot more for the money. I chose this hotel because most Marriotts I stay at are superb. I knew there was no breakfast included but the website said on site restaurant. What I didnt expect was an $11.00 egg on a piece of toast. Our first room was musty smelling and when we sat on the bed there was at least a 6 to 8 inch deep dip in the mattress. There was only one coffee pouch and one cup and no cream and sugar. There was still trash in the can that was under the sink. The sad part is when we changed rooms we were told that others had complained about that room but someone forgot to service it. The new room had a better mattress but someone sprayed a lot of cleaner or air freshener in an effort to cover up the musty odor. Good thing we grabbed some coffee when we changed rooms because the new room had zero coffee or condiments. Not what I expected from a Marriott thats for sure.

Oh goodness. Ive stayed at this hotel 5 or 6 times. Its kind of run down but the staff are nice and I had no real complaints. However, today I tried to check in and they couldnt give several of us rooms because of a laundry problem. I finally got a room and the heating unit wasnt working so I had to go and get a new room. Then there still was no room and others were being checked in so I changed my room type and got in. And now I find that there is a crater in my mattress so big that I had to crawl out of it. This is no where near the level of Courtyard standards. Sorry, but never here again.

Staff are friendly/nice and the decor of the common areas are renovated and clean. The room appeared clean, partially renovated, but the bed linen was dirty (dry spots of some sort of liquid stained the sheets of one bed, my beds comforter had make-up stains and dry blood), the shower curtain was moldy, and the shower head was shaky, rusty and needed cleaning. Its too bad we hadnt noticed some of the staining on the bed until bedtime as well as the hole and peeling ceiling by the doorand were only staying there for the night.

Marriott corporation has not done its due diligence in ensuring hotels under its brand conform to Marriott standards. Checked in around 2:00 P.M, no one was at reception desk, waited for at least 10 minutes for someone to show up. Room had no hand soap, no shampoo, found a housekeeper, she told me they were out of soap. She went into several rooms and was able to find a single bar. Smoke detector was ripped from ceiling, told the front desk receptionist, she said their maintenance man would look at it tomorrow. This is a major safety violation, room and hotel had a musty smell. My wife and I were supposed to stay two nights, we only stayed one. Should of read hotel reviews prior to booking. Looks as though this hotel has a lack of leadership, the sip is sinking and the Captain has taken the only life boat. Marriott corporation you should be ashamed,

Hotel room was relatively clean. However, there were terrible odors. Most of the hotel had a strong skunk-like smell. My children had questions about the pungent stench. Will stay elsewhere next time.
