Neighborhood Explorer: Uptown

Known as the heartbeat of the city, Charlotte’s Uptown (what locals refer to as the downtown area) is always in the spotlight.

Named for its geographic positioning, the district’s center is at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets, which once served as a Native American trading path. Along with glistening skyscrapers, up-and-coming developments, cathedrals, historic landmarks and four grid-like wards, both residents and visitors alike, have walkable access to it all—from delicious eateries to contemporary museums. And if what you’re really looking for in Uptown is your next home, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and are ready to help.

In Uptown, you could be eating a sushi burrito one minute and an acai bowl the next. No matter your choice of cuisine, there’s something for everyone. Try a croque-madame at La Belle Helene, an open-faced barbecue chicken sandwich from Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen, or a pork gyro from Little Village Grille. And if you just can’t decide on what you want to eat, head to one of Charlotte’s central food hubs that have something for everyone: 7th Street Public Market, the Epicentre, or Brevard Court / Latta Arcade.

Ready for fun? From rooting for the Carolina Panthers to sipping cocktails on rooftop bars like Merchant & Trade, thereDi’s no shortage of things to do in Uptown.

Uptown houses many of Charlotte’s renowned art institutions including the Mint Museum Uptown—North Carolina’s first art museum; the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art—which has 1,400 works from the mid-20th-century; and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture—celebrating African-American to American culture. And don’t miss out on Discovery Place Science, a family-friendly attraction with science and technology events and exhibits, or the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a shrine to the history and heritage of NASCAR.
